Senior citizens belongings in assisted living
It is often the case that people will place a high importance on the possessions which they have had for a long time, far beyond their monetary value. An older person will have many memories associated with the things that they have lived with over years or decades. Their personal taste in furnishings and decorating their homes is also a form of self-expression which can make their home feel almost like an extension of the person’s own nature.
For those reasons, when a move to assisted living for a senior citizen is planned, it will be much easier if the person is allowed to bring with them as many as possible of their own things. In some facilities, those more modern ones where living units are self-contained, people may be able to have with them everything they had in their old place, including furniture, provided that the old place was also an apartment.
However, at smaller more traditional senior facilities, it will only be possible for a small number of things to be brought along. In that case it is important that the resident is helped to look after and keep safe their little hoard of personal treasures. It is also important that the elderly person is helped to go through their belongings ahead of the move, to identify those that will travel with them, and make decisions about what will happen to other things.
This can be a very difficult job, but at the same time it can be something of a relief to have made those decisions, as everyone knows who has had a thorough spring-clean of their possessions, even without the need to do so because of a planned move.
If the prospective resident owns an animal it may not be possible to take the pet into the home. Some homes do cater for pet owners, and may, for a charge be able to help take care of the animal, or even take on its care entirely if necessary, bearing in mind the significant benefits of pet-owning for mental health. However most homes do not have that capability, and it is then important to re-home the pet, ideally with a relative so that the owner is as happy with the pet’s placement as their own.
