Biggest Loser Enlists Tennis Diva, Kournikova
Anyone who’s heard me rant about “The Biggest Loser” will know I have my misgivings about Jillian Michaels.
But despite her poor lunge form, inability to use kettlebells and skewed understanding of biochemistry and metabolism, she is at least, you know… A TRAINER.
In a curious move, check that… in an ultimately ridiculous head-shaking, we’re-desperate-for-ratings wtf move, executive producer Todd Lubin announced that the highest paid tennis player never to win a major tournament will replace Jillian, Cara Castronuova and Brett Hoebel. ()
Every show that’s been on too long has it’s “Jumping the shark” moment. The Cosby show brought in Pam, CSI changed cities, Roseanne had a baby, Glee and Entourage…well… do it every week. It would appear that The Biggest Loser’s shark-jumping moment has arrived in season 12 in the form of a long-retired tennis player/model. Says Anna;
I am so beyond excited. This is an amazing and incredible opportunity for me to join The Biggest Loser family and to share all my knowledge and experience that I’ve gained being a professional athlete…I’ve been training my entire life to be a world-class athlete… This is my chance to give back, this is an opportunity of a lifetime. And now I’m going to teach the contestants everything I know.”
I need to be clear here. While I’m tickled that Anna is “So beyond excited” about her opportunity, I’m “so beyond nervous” for the contestants that she is going to teach them everything she knows. I cringe whenever I see former athletes with no formal training in anatomy and biomechanics put people through workouts (athletes or non-athletes).
Being a former athlete does not qualify one to design or implement programs of any kind.
Obviously Kournikova will have some behind-the-scenes help in this department, but it still makes a mockery of an already minimally credible profession, in my opinion.
On a positive note, Anna’s addition is part of an effort to focus more on health and well-being rather than strictly the tape measure – according to Lubin.
Do you think this move is good for the show or an unforced error?
