BMI on Children’s Report Cards

Posted by Christopher Reeks · Leave a Comment

Most parents believe their child is at a healthy weight, but more than likely the child is overweight.

Arkansas has been giving kids a BMI score since 2004 and now some other US States have recently begun to consider following suit. They may be adding a BMI score to student’s report cards along with diet and exercise tips. After all, obesity rates continue to soar in America.

First, it is important to remember what BMI is. BMI is merely a ratio between height and weight that tells you how healthy your weight is. BMI does not take into account frame size or body fat percentage. It is a fast and easy calculation and over time it can be a good tracker of weight fluctuations.

Crazy Nutrition Tips

Posted by Leo Queale · Leave a Comment

The longer were in this field and the more people we talk with, the crazier the questions, tips, and suggestions we continue to hear.

But yesterday may have been the icing on the cake.

Were at the doctors office yesterday.

And the nurse asked Kara how she is feeling.  Kara said “still nauseous.”

The nurse says “youre never going to believe this, but the ONLY thing that works for nausea is eating CHEETOS!  I dont know what it is in the Cheetos, but even the women in the office upstairs at Maternal and Fetal Medicine say the same thing.  And the BEST part you dont have to be pregnant, Cheetos work any time youre nauseous.”

So, out of all of that, you first probably picked up that Team Mohr is expanding and Ella is going to be a big sister later this year.

But getting away from that Cheetos?  Really?

We looked at each other, bit our tongues, and just smiled and nodded.

Then we wondered was it the MSG, dangerous trans fat, loads of salt, or maybe the Yellow #6 that had these “magical” anti nausea properties.

We both agreed the Cheetos themselves would make us sick certainly wouldnt cure a thing!

Why is it that people cling to these old wives tails?  Is it that they want something to be true, like eating Cheetos may actually be good for you, or what?

Make picky eaters your ally, not enemy

They come in many forms, those wily picky eaters. There are the ones who draw lines across plates, and never two colors shall meet. There are those who refuse to put any color other than white in their sweet little mouths. And there are those who declare such doozies as, “If it’s Tuesday, I won’t eat anything but plain rice.”

It’s as if those little noggins dream up ways to confound the ones in charge of getting food to their plates. But therein, grown-ups, lies the secret: It’s your job to get healthful food onto plates; it’s a kid’s job to choose to eat it – or not. All the nudging, cajoling or flat-out threatening will not get the job done.

Running Together, Remotely: Virtual Races Are a Questionable Trend

Posted by Christopher Reeks · Leave a Comment

Im not always on top of my weekly running , but I still like to sign up for races. I can always get through five kilometers in exchange for a t-shirt and post-race brunch, especially if it involves a reasonable start time. But a recent race caught my eye that seemed both genius and a little disturbing: The New York Road Runners Japan Day Run for Hope sounded like a good excuse to run beyond my proclivity for Manhattan brunch: The short, four-mile run is being held to raise funds for Red Cross efforts in Japan .
