US wants you to know the kick in your beer

I’ve become an obsessive label-reader.

You know the type – you might be one, too. When grocery-shopping, I scour bread labels for the loaf with an extra gram of fiber. I read ingredient lists on almost everything, trying to avoid added preservatives, artificial junk or copious amounts of calories and fat.

Unfortunately for me and legions of others who care about what they eat and drink, beer companies are required to provide pitifully little information about what’s inside their bottles.

The federal government and alcohol-industry lobbyists have been quibbling for more than a decade over what to include on beer, wine and hard-liquor labels.

This One Time, At Band Camp, I Played The Flute, And Research Says It’ll Keep Me Young

Weve all heard that musical training gives students an edge in the classroom, and just yesterday I wrote about the positive emotional effects of experiencing art, but researchers have yet another reason to become a true renaissance woman. A new study published in the online journal PLoS One states that those who know how to play musical instruments stay younger and healthier for longer. Arent you wishing you paid closer attention during tuba practice in high school now? Or, even better, joined that dorky marching band?

Researchers at the Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory tested 18 musicians and 19 non-musicians, aged 45 to 65, for the ability to discern speech amongst background noise, auditory memory, visual memory and auditory temporal processing.

Restaurant calorie counts are complex calculations

Posted by Hugo Snowball · Leave a Comment

We’re all one step closer to knowing what we’re eating – caloriewise – before we order it. And the restaurant industry is one step closer to knowing how it’s supposed to inform us of that.

But it may be the middle of 2012 before any of us finally sits down at Olive Garden, open the menu and see that the calamari appetizer we’re about to order contains 890 calories – not including a dipping sauce.

Requirements that restaurant chains with 20 or more units show calorie counts on regular menus, menu boards and drive-through menus were contained in Section 4205 of the 2010 health care reform law.

Bin Laden Bite-Size Vegan Chocolates Are Tasteless

Posted by Christopher Reeks · Leave a Comment

We were certainly no friends of Osama bin Laden, but we already told you earlier this week how we feel about people triumphantly celebrating his death. So what do you think about bin Laden Bites, the small vegan chocolate squares that PETA is sending to U.S. servicemen and women to thank them for a job well done? Personally, we find the whole idea rather tasteless and unappetizing, no matter whos behind it. What about you? Sound off in our comments section, below.

Kentucky Derby, Training, and YOUR Why

Posted by Leo Queale · Leave a Comment

You may have heard that the Kentucky Derby is this weekend Saturday, May 7th, to be exact.

This week in Louisville is crazy parties, Gala events, parades and of course horse racing.

We took Ella to some events around Derby so she could enjoy the horses, Parade, etc.  And she even made her own Derby Hat.

And of course we couldnt help notice the size, musculature, and beauty of these elite horse that will be competing against one another

But that brings me to my next point.

These horses are worth millions of dollars.  They costs millions to buy.  And they are treated like gold in hopes that theyll win the event.

Being treated like gold means being fed the best food to fuel their bodies to perform and having the best trainers to make sure they are properly prepared to run their events.

And to think of treating the horses any other way would make people cringe.

OBVIOUSLY these horses will be fed the right performance foods and train properly.  Theyre worth millions of dollars!

My question, then, is why doesnt the same hold true for people?

Are we not worth taking care of our bodies again, fueling to perform well (both physically and mentally) and also exercise regularly?

I think the question then is what is your why?

WHY do you treat your body like you do positively or negatively?

Here is just a short list of why I do what I do:

  • Look better (hey, Im not going to lie, this of course plays a role)
  • Have more energy
  • Feel better
  • Be a great example for our daughter
  • Reduce the risk of disease
