When they get old people might find it difficult to carry out themselves the daily activities like preparing food, bathing, cleaning, laundry etc. Living alone becomes difficult even if many of the older people prefer that. Besides the assistance in daily chores these people might also require frequent medical check-ups. The nursing homes provide intensive care but will not allow people to be independent in their own way. This is the major reason why a lot of people these days prefer assisted living facilities. Such a facility allows older people to stay alone but will be provided all the assistance they require
The major advantages of assisted living facilities are:
Assisted living helps in community living. People will be allowed to cook, eat and pass the time together. This will help in eliminating the loneliness in older people
Older people may be given semi-private or private apartments for living
People will be given adequate medical care if required. But this will not be as intensive as in a nursing home
Assistance will be given in bathing, cooking, laundry, cleaning, transportation etc.
Special help may be given to people with mental sickness like dementia, Alzheimer’s disease etc.
A major disadvantage that people find with assisted living is that it is costly. Moreover medical insurance facilities will not accept claims on this. So, only those have some other source of income can avail of this facility. To pay for assisted living, people might liquidate assets like car, home etc. In many cases people may have regular income sources like pension but for those who have to pay off loans and bills this won’t be sufficient. So, it is necessary that the members of the family should find some alternative to meet the expenses for assisting living.
This facility will only accept those people who are adequately healthy. People can leave the place at any time if they wish so. It is due to its very social nature and facilities that a lot of people choose assisted living facility. But while choosing assisted living facilities it is necessary to make sure that tit provides all the adequate facilities that an elderly person might require.
